What is Artsmark?

Artsmark is a national award scheme managed by Arts Council England that recognises schools with a high level of provision in the full range of arts - music, dance, drama and art and design. The award scheme is open to all schools in England - primary, secondary, special schools and pupil referral units, both maintained and independent.

By gaining an Artsmark, a school shows its commitment to the wider development of young people and teachers and to raising the profile of the arts in the school and local community.

Schools can apply for one of three levels - Artsmark, Artsmark Silver or Artsmark Gold. Criteria for each level are detailed in the application form and guidance materials are available at: www.artsmark.org.uk

ArtForms support for Artsmark

ArtForms can support schools in a number of ways with the application process for Artsmark:

Briefing Meeting for Schools

Held in the spring term, this briefing gives a general overview of the scheme and supports schools in their decision to go ahead with an application. The application process is most valuable when undertaken over a period of time, feeding into a school's on-going self-evaluation process. ArtForms also invites staff from Artsmark Gold schools and specialist arts colleges within the authority to share their experiences and the benefits of the Artsmark scheme.

Development Session for Schools

Held at the beginning of the autumn term, this session is aimed at schools that have decided to go ahead with an Artsmark application. The workshop offers teachers the chance to troubleshoot any aspects of the application and to share practical information. A lead teacher from one of the Artsmark Gold schools in Leeds, as well as a national Artsmark validator supports this session, offering advice on gathering and measuring data and creating evidence.

Ongoing Support for Schools

During the year, schools can access support from ArtForms to audit their arts provision and to develop an arts policy. ArtForms can act as referee for schools that are applying to Artsmark.

If you would like further information about Artsmark and the support we can offer, please contact Clare Price (nee Biggs) Head of Arts Development on tel: 0113 230 4074.
